Of the 3 bids I received to do the installation, the lowest 2 were both $170,000. This amount was much higher than I anticipated. When I reviewed the bids with the contractors, a principal reason I was given for the higher cost was that the Poway Landscape Manual requires a much higher standard of construction than other cities require. One bidder specifically said that it was much closer to what was required in commercial installations. I also remember comments regarding the large number of shutoff valves required and that the valve boxes were much more elaborate than typical residential boxes. This cost does not include the cost of clearing and thinning the plants in the Zone B defensible space around the house. That was about $10,000. 1 appreciated the staff and Fire Department allowing me to not grub and irrigate Zone B. I would recommend the formation of a committee to examine the current manual and compare it to what other cities are doing. Sincerely, Dave Brooks 1 of 1 January 24, 2017 Item # 5.1
