BACKGROUND
The City of Poway has established a procedure to recognize the fulfillment of all requirements by a
Girl Scout to achieve the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest rank in Girl Scouting, Recently, the
City of Poway was notified that Allison Christian, Amy Doroba, Stephanie Duncan, Kelley Nicole
Hockett, Melissa Eleanor Lokensgard, Sara Osmus, Jennica Parker, Alexandra Paur, Sarah
Sangalang, Kathleen Scherer, Katherine Stahl, Katherine D. VanDerhoff, and Amanda Jean Young
will be granted the Gold Award on June 26, 2005.
FINDINGS
Founded in 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, by visionary Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts started with
a membership of only 18 girls and a dream. Within months, girl members were hiking through the
woods, playing basketball in a curtained-off court, and going on camping trips. Throughout its
history, Girl Scouting has held onto its traditional values while maintaining a contemporary outlook
- a dual focus expected to continue in the 21st century.
In 1980, the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. (GSUSA) introduced the highest recognition for girls in Girl
Scouting - the Girl Scout Gold Award. The requirements involve the completion of several interest
projects, a variety of leadership experiences, career exploration, and service projects. The final
requirements allow the Girl Scout to demonstrate her skills and abilities regarding goal setting,
planning, putting her values into action, and relating to the community.

To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest rank in Scouting, a Girl Scout must fulfill
requirements in the areas of leadership, interest projects, career exploration, and the Senior Girl
Scout Challenge. Although many options are available to demonstrate proficiency in these areas,
there are a number of specific Girl Scout Gold Award requirements: Each Girl Scout must
complete four interest projects; earn the Senior Girl Scout Leadership Award; earn the Career
Exploration Pin; earn the Senior Girl Scout Challenge; and, plan and implement a Girl Scout Gold
Award project. The Girl Scout Gold Award honors girls who demonstrate an exceptional
commitment to their communities and an outstanding dedication to achievement.
