WHEREAS, Anurag Kashyap, a straight A student at Meadowbrook Middle
School in Poway, won the 2005 Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 2, 2005; and
WHEREAS, at the age of thirteen, in his last eligible year for competition,Anurag
defeated 2�2 other spellers during two intense days with i9 rounds of competition in
Washington D.C. by successfully spelling the word "appoggiatura," which is a term that
describes a musical note; and
WHEREAS, Anurag represented the San Diego Region in the National Spelling
Bee for the second consecutive year by winning the San Diego County Spelling Bee; and
WHEREAS, Anurag is only the second Californian to win the National Spelling
Bee; and
WHEREAS, in preparation for the Bee,Anurag studied more than ioo,000 words
with his coach and English Teacher Jim Dyer, demonstrating great perseverance and
dedication to this endeavor; and
WHEREAS, Anurag has made the City of Poway and its residents very proud of
his historic championship.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mickey Cafagna, Mayor of the CiTy of Poway, on behalf of
the entire Poway CiTy Council, do hereby congratulate Anurag Kashyap, on winning the
�gth Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, commend his love for spelling and education
in general, and wish him success in his future pursuits.
