DISTRICT ATTORNEY
ELECT A PROSECUTOR NOT A POLITICIAN
First and foremost Terri is a prosecutor, not a politician.
As the daughter of a dedicated California Highway Patrol Officer and a registered nurse, Terri was raised
in a family that believed deeply in public service. She was raised to respect law enforcement and
authority in the 1960's, at a time when law enforcement officers were not widely held in the highest
regard.
Terri, the youngest of three children, was born in Long Beach in 1959 to Jim and Betty Wyatt, where her
parents worked hard to own a small home in a typical California suburb. In 1961, the family moved to
Big Bear Lake, California. In those days, the resident CHP officers and resident San Bernardino County
Sheriffs Deputies shared a small office in the back of the Fire Station.
Growing up in a public safety environment contributed to her ultimate career choice. Her law
enforcement family has given Terri the insight on how to work well with all members of the public safety
organizations. Terri was also very fortunate that her family emphasized education and encouraged her
to reach for the highest levels of academic and professional success. Her family moved to San
Bernardino when she was nine years old.
In high school, Terri played on the first girls' volleyball team at her school as a Freshman. The team lost
almost every game that first year. But by her senior year, the team was undefeated and took 2nd place
in the CIF finals. Like her parents, her coach taught her that hard work, preparation and dedication will
in fact lead to successful results. It's a life lesson that she still embraces.
Terri's hard work, preparation and dedication paid off when she was named the senior class
Valedictorian. Her high school graduation was Terri's first public speaking experience and her goal of
becoming a career prosecutor had already taken root. To that end, Terri attended the University of San
Diego School of Law after college and interned in the DA's office in 1985 -1986. She landed a coveted
spot as a Graduate Law Clerk in the Vista branch of the DA's office in 1986. That's when Terri realized
she had answered her life's calling.
Having a nurse and a cop for parents also gave her a sense of genuineness that comes from hearing
about serious societal trauma. Developing a strong sense of humor and the use of sound judgment
based upon solid common sense were also must -have qualities in her family, which have served her well
as a criminal prosecutor.
ELECT A PROSECUTOR NOT A POLITICIAN
Public service, compassion for the injured or victimized, and the tireless enforcement of the law all
seemed to come naturally to Terri. As a career Deputy District Attorney for 26 years in San Diego
County, she has helped victims of serious crimes get through the extremely difficult times of seeing their
attackers or the attackers of their loved ones in court and seeing them again at the parole hearings,
many years down the road.
Terri has achieved justice in almost 90 jury trials that she personally prosecuted and in the hundreds of
criminal prosecutions that she handled over the years. Her personal conviction rate for felony jury trials
is over 96 %.
During her tenure at the San Diego DA's Office, Terri had the great satisfaction of serving as Chief of the
Case Issuance, Extraditions Division and the Lifer Hearing Unit for more than five years. She personally
revised the DA's extradition policies, allowing the office to bring back for trial a record number of
serious criminals who took flight to Mexico and other parts of the world. Prior to Terri's leadership, the
office had not seen a formal extradition under our treaty with Mexico that had been in place since the
70s.
As a career prosecutor for the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, she has had the pleasure of
working with, working for and mentoring some of the most talented career prosecutors, investigators,
paralegals and support staff in the entire country. The most important value that a DA can have is being
dedicated to doing the right thing in all prosecutions.
Terri Wyatt is first and foremost a prosecutor, not a politician.
