AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF POWAY,
CALIFORNIA, AMENDING SECTION 2.04.020 OF
THE POWAY MUNICIPAL CODE TO INCREASE
COUNCIL COMPENSATION
WHEREAS, Section 2.04.020 of the Poway Municipal Code sets forth the salary
for the Mayor and each member of the City Council; and
WHEREAS, California Government Code section 36516 allows Councilmember
compensation to be increased by no more than five percent (5 %) for each calendar year
since the last increase became operative; and
WHEREAS, the City Council last increased its salary by ordinance in 2008; and
WHEREAS, State law would have permitted a maximum pay increase of forty
percent (40 %); and
WHEREAS, the pay increase being adopted at this time equals 11.7 %.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POWAY DOES
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1: Section 2.04.020 of the Poway Municipal Code is hereby repealed.
SECTION 2: Section 2.04.020 of the Poway Municipal Code is hereby added to
read as follows:
2.04.020 Compensation.
A. The Mayor and each member of the City Council shall receive
compensation as follows:
1. From the date this Ordinance is adopted through December 31, 2016,
the Mayor shall receive as salary the sum of $1,467.45 per month as
authorized by Sections 36516 and 36516.1 of the Government Code
and all other members of the City Council shall receive as salary the
sum of $1,167.45 per month as authorized by Section 36516 of the
Government Code payable at the same time and in the same manner as
salaries that are paid to other officers and employees of the City.
2. Effective January 1, 2017, the Mayor shall receive as salary the sum of
$1,825.67 per month as authorized by Sections 36516 and 36516.1 of
the Government Code and all other members of the City Council shall
receive the sum of $1,304.05 per month as authorized by Section 36516

of the Government Code payable at the same time and in the same
manner as salaries that are paid to other officers and employees of the
City.
B. The salaries established by this section are exclusive of any amounts
payable to each member of the City Council as reimbursement for actual
and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of official duties for
the City.
SECTION 3: This Ordinance shall be codified.
EFFECTIVE DATE: This Ordinance shall take effect and be in force thirty (30)
days after its adoption.
CERTIFICATION /PUBLICATION: The City Clerk shall certify the adoption of this
Ordinance and cause it or a summary of it, to be published with the names of the City
Council members voting for and against the same in the Poway News Chieftain, a
newspaper of general circulation in the City of Poway within fifteen (15) days after its
adoption and shall post a certified copy of this Ordinance in the Office of the City Clerk
in accordance with Government Code § 36933.
Introduced and first read at a Regular Meeting of the City Council of the City of
Poway held the 15th day of March, 2016, and thereafter PASSED AND ADOPTED at a
regular meeting of said City Council held the 5th day of April, 2016.
