BACKGROUND
A. Project Description
Section 17.40.170 of the Zoning Development Code requires Council
approval for a comprehensive: sign program. The regulations allow the
Council to apply conditions to the sign program to integrate signs
with the building and landscape design into a unified architectural
unit. The regulations limit the signage to
a. Using the same background color on all signs;
b. Using not more than three different colors. for sign lettering
c. Usingthe same type of cabinet supports, or method of mounting
for signs of the same type, or by using the: same type of
construction material for components, such as sign copy, cab-
nets and supports, or by using dissimilar signing determined
compatible by the. Director of Planning Services.]
d. Using the same form .of illumination for. all signs, or by using
varied forms of illumination determined compatible by the
Director of Planning Services and
e. Allowing the use of different colors for logos
A Comprehensive Sign Program (.CSP 81-101) was previously approved for
the Center. The program required wall -mounted signs to have brown
cabinetsand ivory plexiglass faces as the background color. Letter
style and color was optional (see Attachments 5 and 61
Yamaha Motorcycle's Sales and Service is proposing to utilize approxi.
mately one half of the existing building.. The applicant would like to
use Yamaha's colors of yellow and black on the interior illuminated
wall and pole sign and retain the ivory background color for the other,
businesses in the Center. (see Attachments 4 and 7). The proposed
Yamaha sign is 40 feet long and two feet eight inches in height.
Total sign area is. approximately 104 square feet. The sign complies
with the Code's requirement for sign area. Staff recommends that the
Council approve the sign's area, letter style, and Tetter color, but,
deny the: request for a yellow plexiglass sign face and black cabinet.
The proposed sign will be consistent with the type of cabinet support
and form of illumination as the other signs in the Center as approved

After lengthly discussion with Yamaha Corporation,
agreed to an irregular shaped. sign. It is the color of
ground and the color of the cabinet which we need changed to
conform to the Yamaha corporate colors. We fully agree with
the need to conform to the basic dimensions of the sign but
feel the corporate colors. of Yamaha will allow better visibility
as wellas enhance the building itself.
The sign has been designed and would be placed.
to divide the shopping center into two parts. As we are
leasing 54Z of the building, this seems appropriate..
and depth of the sign will be identical to the other
on the building. The length will be in proportion:
the length of space leased. The sign will be placed equidistant.
nearest sign to its; left, as you face it, and from
the end of the building to its right.
The sign in the parkway has five: spaces all, are equal in
size and shape. This allows us. 20Z of the sign while leasing
54% of the building. To address this problem we propose a one
word. sign YAMAHA, This sign allows maximum visibility when done
with the corporate colors of yellow and black.; The placement of
the sign insert will beat the bottom of the existing parkway sign:.:
This placement again separates the shopping center with minimum
effort.
art.
We feel that this proposed color change in the backgroundan.d,
cabineton the building, and background only on the parkway sign,,
is in the best interest of Yamaha of Poway, the other tennents,
and the: city of Poway.
