Community-created arts council
Thursday, April 1, 202110:18:56 AM
Thank you for your support of the Poway Center for the Performing Arts and local performance
groups! While Poway is considering creating an advisory council, I would like to see a community-
created Arts Council instead. As the center serves the community, it requires community support
and action. A community-created council would relieve some of the financial burden from the city
through fundraising campaigns and events and could work with the city on grant opportunities.
More importantly, I think a community-based (versus city) would be more responsive to traditionally
underserved groups.
Thank you,

Subject: Poway Performing Arts Center
Thursday, April 1, 2021 2:47:20 PM Date:
Thank you for your commitment to the Poway Center for Performing Arts. The school district does
not have the expertise to run the amazing theatre and performance events my family and I have
enjoyed all these years. Going forward, there is much support for a community-created Arts Council
in Poway. If one Powegian can almost single-handedly save San Diego opera, you can be sure there
are many other local supporters who welcome the chance to work with regional arts groups and
businesses. The future is exciting -your leadership is needed now!
Warm regards,

Agenda Item #9: PCPA access for PSO
Saturday, April 3, 2021 8:52:00 PM
To whom it may concern,
My family first moved to Poway in 1986, I am a PUSD/MCHS
graduate (class of '88), and am now a Poway homeowner, raising
my family in the City in the Country.
I am also a member of the Poway Symphony Orchestra, and I want
to advocate that the city council do what it takes to maintain
PUSD (and PSO) access to the Poway Performing Arts Center.
I have read the Agenda item #9 packet from the Poway website,
and it is evident that the authors researched the issue
thoroughly and represented the decision points fairly; and that
it is not a trivial question.
I want to stress the intangible benefit the PCPA brings to
Poway in the form of PUSD and community performance activities
--for the performers (adults and many, many children) and
their families in the audience. Especially as we emerge from
pandemic-necessitated isolation, community access to the PCPA
will provide critical opportunities for neighborly engagement.
Please carefully weigh your decisions, and do what it takes to
support the community benefit of the PCPA; don't let it become
only a for-profit touring concert venue.
thanks,
Reuben Settergren

My husband and I loved attending the concert of Beethoven's 9th Symphony! We had just
moved here from Minneapolis/ St. Paul, Minnesota where we were strong supporters of music
and the arts. We hope that the city will make it possible to continue to support the Poway
Symphony Orchestra. The arts are such a very important part of the wonderful quality of life
here.

Agenda Item #9 -PCPA for April 6th Meeting
Saturday, April 3, 2021 5:43:07 PM
Dear Poway City Council,
My husband and I have been a resident of Rancho Bernardo since 2005. I have both
performed at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts as a violist with various
orchestras such as the Poway Symphony and orchestras for "Messiah"
performances, and pianist for many PUSD Choirs, the RB Chorale high school solo
competition, and other events. Our 4 children (now adults in their 20s) have
performed on the stage with the Missoula Children's Theater and with PUSD Choirs,
Orchestras, and Bands. I have also attended countless performances at the PCPA
including musicals, ballets, PUSD concerts, Poway Symphony, and many outside
groups such as BYU groups, and The Capitol Steps.
As a musician as well as a supporter of the performing arts, I am delighted to know
that the City will continue to operate the PCPA. The performing arts are an important
part of life in a city. The PCPA is an ideal place to attend a variety of shows, from
ballet to country music, from broadway shows to symphony concerts.
It is definitely important for the city of Poway to fully support the arts in Poway. The
City offers so many worthwhile services to the entire community. The arts are also
very important to the quality of life here. The formation of an Arts Council would be
very useful, if not crucial if it is designed to raise funds to cover some of the costs for
running the PCPA. While we are well aware that the PCPA has been a financial drain
on the City's budget, it appears that there are visible ways to reduce costs, such as
ending one-sided subsidies. The city should implement such necessary changes to
reduce the deficit to a manageable level.
The city has been running the PCPA with a substantial operating deficit. After over
thirty years the existing Agreement for Use appears to be outdated. Since then many
more groups use the theatre, costs have gone up substantially, and there is now a
vibrant symphony orchestra that needs better recognition. The City should develop
new agreements with all parties involved in order to assure the success of the PCPA.
Thank you so much. This will be one of the best uses of city money to keep culture
alive.

Agenda Item #9 for April 6, 2021 meeting re PCPA
Monday, April 5, 2021 7:57:07 AM
I don't know how interested you are in community input but I just wanted to share how much
we miss the PCPA and how much we are looking forward to it reopening (safely) so we can
return.
When we moved to Ramona (Mt. Woodson) a few years ago, we were really sad about losing
easy access to various entertainment venues.
Then we discovered PCP A!
Oh my, so many wonderful performers, and just a 15-minute drive from our home. Easy
parking, too! We were so excited to find such a special venue: large enough to attract quality
performers and small enough to have nice acoustics, and not a bad seat in the house. We love
to get a glass of wine and walk around to look at artwork before a show. The expansive glass
windows and the large atrium-like feel aren't found anywhere else in the County that I know
of. And all the volunteers and employees are SO nice!
We have seen Roger McGuinn, The Smithereens, Jake Shimabukuro, The Temptations, Back
to the Garden, and a few Poway Symphony Orchestra performances including, most recently,
Beethoven's 9th Symphony. We hadn't been big symphony fans in the past but John LoPiccolo
was so engaging and we were so surprised by the community talent that we signed up
whenever we could. We had tickets to the Spanish Festival last year (which we donated back
to the PCPA).
I looked at the agenda for tomorrow's meetings and I see there are a lot of suggestions for
ideas to make the PCPA more viable and I'm happy to see that there are ideas being
considered to move forward. The PCPA is a VERY special place and so many of us are
excited about seeing what the future holds.
Sincerely,
Michelle Sund

I am the co-owner and business director of Dance & Company with two locations in San Diego. Our
studio has enjoyed the use of the PCPA for our annual summer production for the past 7 years, and
would like to thank the City Council for their decision to continue to own and operate the PCPA.
Dance & Company would of course love to continue to rent the PCPA for our annual summer
production and in fact has reserved a date for usage this season. We realize that in order for the
theatre to continue in operate that the rental rates may need to increase. We understand that this
increase would not take place until August of 2022 and that the financial impact for the rental would
affect us minimally.
Thank you again for your consideration.

Agenda #9, Kristine Griffin, Ramona/Julian Academy of Dance
Monday, April 5, 202110:47:22 AM
To whom it may concern:
I wish to thank you for your decision to continue to own and operate the PCPA. We
have been renting your fine Performing Art Center for close to 20
years for our dance concerts. It is the only and closest facility available to Ramona
and we feel blessed to have been a part of it for so many years.
We look forward to continued use of the PCPA. Thank you for your hard work, time
and efforts!
We are currently booked for June 25th and 26th, 2021. We have been hard hit
financially by the covid shutdowns and although we will GLADLY pay more to use the
facility in the future, we welcome the possibility of little to no increase in fees for this
year, and hopefully a reduction in some of the fees. We have rented the facility the
last weekend in June for nearly 20 years and would like to keep those date, the last
Friday and Saturday in June for future productions if possible.
While Ramona/Julian Academy of Dance is located in Ramona, several of our
teachers and students are Poway residents.
We look forward to continuing to bring art to the Poway community! Thank you for
your time.
Sincerely,
Kristine Griffin

remain an active part of our community. We will continue to support it and attend several more events in

Dear Mayor Vaus, Deputy Mayor Leonard, Council Member Grosch, Council
Member Mullin, and Council Member Frank,
Thank you for your commitment to the Arts and subsidy support for the
Poway Center for the Performing Arts theater and local performance
groups. What a treasure! City support for the Arts encourages
participation and appreciation for the Arts by all residents within the
city and neighboring communities. And when people come into the City for
theater, they shop at local stores and dine at local restaurants.
Studies have shown that the Arts can have a positive impact on the local
economy.
The creation of a non-profit community arts council would be a win-win
path to more community support. In San Diego, a group of enthusiastic
arts supporters created the Spreckels Organ Society, leading to more
concerts, cost-sharing for the civic organist's salary and the
maintenance of the organ, and expansion of the organ.
To the Arts!

City Council Agenda Item #9
Monday, April 5, 2021 11:54:23 AM
Honorable Poway Council,
As a resident of Escondido and supporter of California Center for the Arts,Escondido, we are
still unable to develop an orchestra to bring us your music. We (and the rest of North County)
must rely on (and enjoy) the Poway Symphony Orchestra to bring us great performances of
some of the finest music every composed. The current ticket prices are fair and the orchestra
has shown class.
The City performs a real service to its residents and your neighbors by furnishing the forum
that makes it possible. Poway is known for its arts and this enhances that image. We hope
you can continue these great events.

Agenda Item #9
Saturday, April 3, 2021 7:43:55 PM
Dear Poway City Council Members,
A sincere thank you for your decision to have the City of Poway continue to own and operate
the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. This amazing arts venue is truly the gem of this
City. To those of us in the business of the arts, it is an invaluable part of the success of our
individual businesses. Our students are gifted in so many ways by performing on this
incredible stage.
I have instructed the children of Poway in the art of dance for more than 30 years. Due to
COVID-19, last year was the first time in 30 years we did not perform on the PCPA stage.
What a disappointment and loss to our students and their families! Nothing can compare to
performing on that stage. Our community is filled with students who have come through our
doors and onto that stage -educated in the ways of a professional theater, performing for a
live, appreciative audience. Lights, sound, props, drops, curtains, techs ... and so much more!
We look forward to the day we can once again utilize the PCPA. Budgets are all currently
strained due to this pandemic. We are hopeful that your Council will consider how deeply
affected all small ( and large) businesses have been when deciding what we will be required to
pay. We have confidence that your Council will achieve a positive solution that benefits all.
Making sure all users contribute fairly, making some changes in staffing and ticketing, as well
as the formation of a fundraising group can help!
We can't wait to get back to performances as they should be. Our dance families can't wait
either.
Again, thank you for all you are doing to ensure the arts will continue to thrive -and be seen
on the PCP A stage.
Sincerely,
Debbora Childress
