llst ofper,t.il1ent Do's and .Bo'n' ts as a guide to homeowners. Here are 'some:
I r DON,'.Tb10ck terrace ,drains, brow ditches, on slopes or at the tops
of cut slopes on sloping ground. These are generally located on terraces
and designed to carry away runoff to a place where it can be safely distr.ibuted,
If sever~l homes are located on the same terrace, it might be a good idea to
check with your 'n'eighbors. Water backed up on their property may eventually
reach, your.s," ,Water :backed up on surface drains will tend to overflow and
seep into' the ter-races, creating less stable slopes.
2) DON'T permit water to gather above or on the edge of slopes (ponding).
Water ej"d:herinq here will tend to beoin erosion.' Once erosion is started, it
is, difficult to control. ,It moves q~ickly;
3) DON'T connect roof draIns and roof gutter.s and down spouts to sub-
drains. Arrange tham so 'that they will flow out onto a paved driveway or the
street where water' may be di:ssapated over a wide: surface.
4) DON'T spill water oveJ;' 'slopes, even where this may seem a good' way
.to' prevent ponding. This tends to cause beginning erosion and, in the case
of f:i-l:).., can eat away carefully engineered and compacted land.
5) DON"T over-irrigate slopes. NaturallYi ground cover or ice-plant
will -require, some moisture during the hot summer months, but during the wet i
season, irrigation can cause ice plant and other ground 'cover to pull loose

l) DO clear surface and terrace drains and check them frequently during i
tJ:1e rainy season, with a shovel, if necessary. Ask your neighbors to do !

2) DO be sure that all d'r'ains have ouklets'. Under the right conditions i
this can be tested simply on a dry day with a hose. If blockage is evident,
you may have to use a roto~J:'ooter. clea.r of debris and o,ther materials I
3) DO keep drain openings (weep-hOles)
which. could block them in, a storm.
4) DO check roof drains and gutters and down spouts to be sure they are
cl'ear.
5) DO check all outlets, at the top of slopes to be Sure that they are
cl'ear and that water will not overflow the slope itself, causi-ng erosion.
6) DO check for loose Hll above and below your property if you live on .

7 ) DO watch hoses ans sprinklers. During the rainy season, little, if 5!.
