A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF POWAY, CALIFORNIA
ESTABLISHING A POLICY FOR THE NAMING OF NEW STREETS
WHEREAS, it is necessary to establish procedures for the
naming of new public and private streets in the City of Poway in the
interest of uniformity and to avoid confusion to the public;
NOW, therefore, be it resolved that the following shall
be the policy of the City Council of the City of Poway for street
naming:
SECTION 1: STREET NAMES

Street names should be pleasant sounding, appropriate,
easy to read (so that the public, and children in
particular, can uhderstand the name in an emergency
situation), and should add to the pride of home owner-
ship and the community.
The following types of street names are unacceptable:
1. Numerical names (lst, 2nd, 3rd, etc.);
2. Alphabetical letters (A, B, C, etc.);
3. Frivolous, complicated, or undesirable names;
4. Unconventional spelling;
5. Compound names;
6. Given or surnames of persons living or dead
(Pioneer families, or historic persons, etc.,
excluded).
Streets which are cont~ shall be extended in accordance
with the present street names wherever possible and
feasible.
Discontinuous streets shall not be given the same name.
Duplication of existing or proposed street names is
prohibited. Similar sounding names are considered to
be duplication, regardless of spelling.
Streets with a 90 degree or more change of direction shall
change names at a convenient and appropriate point as
determined by the Director of Planning Services.

SECTION 2: PROCEDURE
It is the responsibility of the applicant for development
resulting in the construction of new streets to submit
names to the City for approval.
The Director of Planning Services or his designee shall
approve all new street names in the City of Poway.
PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of
Poway, California, at a regular meeting thereof this 27th day of
July, 1982.
