Res 88-023ARESOLUTION NO. 88- o23A A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POWAY, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING A ONE-HALF CENT SALES TAX, FOR A PERIOD OF TEN YEARS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE FACILITIES IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY WHEREAS, severe jail overcrowding in San Diego County has forced the release of more than 2,000 criminals each month into our county and community during the past year; and WHEREAS, the potential grows daily for injury to law-abiding citizens, com- mitted by such freed lawbreakers; and WHEREAS, the danger to the men and women serving as police and Sheriff's officers has increased to unacceptable levels because of jails now filled to 200% of capacity; and WHEREAS, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on January 5, 1988, to place on the June 7, ballot a measure to add 1/2 cent to the sales tax for no longer than 10 years to pay for the construction of much needed criminal justice facilities; and WHEREAS, AB 2505 provides for the creation of the San Diego County Regional Justice Facilities Financing Agency, empowered to collect and use such monies for implementation of the county master plan for criminal justice facilities; and WHEREAS, the City of Poway overcrowding problem in the County effort to solve this problem. recognizes the seriousness of the jail of San Diego and wishes to support every NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Poway hereby support a one-half cent addition to the sales tax for no longer than ten years to pay for the construction of criminal justice facilities, and urges all voters to support and approve this measure on election day, June 7, 1988.
