RESOLUTION OF T~R CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POWAY
URGING THE CALIFORNIA STATE LEGISLATURE
TO ADOPT LEGISLATION RESTRICTING
THE SALE AND POSSESSION OF ASSAULT WEAPONS
WHEREAS, the proliferation and use of assault weapons pose a
serious threat to the health, safety, welfare and security of the
citizens of the State of California; and
WHEREAS, the function of assault weapons is such that use as
a recreational weapon is far outweighed by the potential threat
that the weapon will cause injury and death to human beings; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary to establish statewide regulations
to restrict the possession or sale of assault weapons in order to
protect the safety of the citizens of this State and to enable
law enforcement authorities to deal more effectively with the
unprecedented and increasing wave of violence by persons
utilizing assault weapons.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Poway does
hereby resolve and urge the legislature of the State of
California to act immediately to restrict the use and possession
of assault weapons within the State of California to military,
law enforcement, and other appropriate authorized persons as part
of an overall policy to improve the criminal justice system.
PASSED, ADOPTED, SIGNED AND APPROVED by the City Council of
the City of Poway at a regular meeti~ thereof this 28th day of
February , 1989.
