A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF POWAY, CALIFORNIA, APPROVING A
CALIFORNIA SMOKE-FREE CITIES MINI-GRANT
APPLICATION AND TOBACCO PREVENTION PROJECT OF POWAY
WHEREAS, the City of Poway is dedicated to promoting a
healthy lifestyle associated with a smoke-free Poway; and
WHEREAS, the California Smoke-Free Cities Project is
offering mini-grants to cities attempting to discourage tobacco
use through projects which seek to ~ssess community climate for
change, to educate the community about change, to support local
policies, to support implementation, or to study the impact of
local policy; and
WHEREAS, a 1990 survey conducted by the San Diego County
Office of Education concluded that the percentage of Poway 7th
grade students smoking more than 20 cigarettes per day is twice
that of all State of California 7th graders; and
WHEREAS, Poway 9th grade students in 1990 reached a higher
consumption rate of using cigarettes than 9th grade students
within both the County of San and the State of California; and
WHEREAS, the City recognizes a responsibility to protect the
health and future of the youth in Poway; and
WHEREAS, the City supports the implementation of a primary
tobacco prevention project which educates youth about the use of
tobacco as well as discourages youth from obtaining cigarettes;
and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of Poway hereby supports and endorses the City of Poway's
California Smoke-Free Cities Mini-Grant Application and Tobacco
Prevention Project of Poway and approves all funds which may be
awarded to the City from the submittal of the California Smoke-
Free Cities Mini-Grant Application.
