Res 92-035RESOLUTION NO. 92 - 035 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POWAY, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE COMMITTEE TO ENACT A PATRIOTIC ALTERNATIVE TO COMMERCIAL TAKEOVER OF AMERICAN AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE (P.A.C.T.) Wq{EREAS, McDonnell Douglas Corporation, Long Beach, has demonstrated before a Committee of Congress the need for additional capital and facilities to develop the MD-12 commercial aircraft; and Wq{EREAS, Taiwan Aerospace has made offers to purchase significant percentages of McDonnell Douglas Corporation and General Dynamics Corporation, Convair Division; and WHEREAS, McDonnell Douglas Corporation and General Dynamics Corporation have been integral parts of Southern California's labor force since 1935; and WHEREAS, 53,000 direct employees and over 200,000 employees and principals of vendor and subcontracting firms are dependent upon the continued presence and future expansion of McDonnell Douglas Corporation and General Dynamics Corporation; and WHEREAS, The Committee to Enact a Patriotic Alternative to Commercial Takeover of American Aircraft Production and Maintenance is strongly supported to finding alternative ways to save American jobs for the security of our country's aerospace technology, for preservation of aerospace jobs in Southern California and the nation, and for youth training and skilled employment opportunities now and for the future. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Poway, that the Poway City Council hereby supports the Committee to Enact a Patriotic Alternative to Commercial Takeover of American Aircraft Production and Maintenance (P.A.C.T.) in efforts to find a suitable alternative to foreign investment in McDonnell Douglas Aircraft and General Dynamics Corporations. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Poway City Council hereby requests our local congressional delegation to sponsor legislation and urge Congress and the President of the United States to postpone approval of any partnership or purchase with or by Taiwan Aerospace, or any other foreign entity, for such reasonable time as necessary to find an American solution to capitalization of these vital and respected aerospace companies.
