A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POWAY, CALIFORNIA
OPPOSING UNSUITABLE AND DEROGATORY LANGUAGE
ON RADIO AIRWAVES AND ENCOURAGING THE FEDERAL
COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION TO ENFORCE ITS
PROHIBITION AGAINST UNSUITABLE BROADCASTS
WHEREAS, every day local and nationally syndicated radio broadcasts contain
material for mature audiences which contain sexual overtones and innuendoes, vulgar
language, racist comments, and sexist remarks; and
WHEREAS, radio programs with unsuitable material continue to air during the
day which increases the likelihood that impressionable children have the opportunity to
access this programming; and
WHEREAS, a United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit
decision reinforced the Federal Communications Commission's restriction on mature
programming to the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.; and
WHEREAS, the City of Poway has always supported a high quality of life for the
local community, making Poway a wonderful environment for raising families; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
The City Council of the City of Poway opposes radio programming that contains
material not suitable for young developing minds and encourages the Federal
Communications Commission to enforce its restrictions on this type of radio
broadcasting to the hours of 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
PASSED, ADOPTED, AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of
Poway, California, at a regular meeting thereof this 2nd day of December, 1997.
