Fitch, Assistant City';~Manager~_ Penny Riley, Senior Management Analys¥~~ DATE: April 4, 1995 SUBJECT: Commercial Enhancement Award Program ABSII~ACT On February 28, 1995, during the State of the City address, Mayor Don Higginson announced the implementation of a Commercial Enhancement Award. This recognition program is designed to highlight the investment in our community put forth by local businesses. Nominations for the Commercial Enhancement Award will be submitted to the Office of the Mayor for review. Presentations will be made at City Council meetings and the Annual Economic Development Conference. ENVIRONMENTALREVIEW This item is not subject to CEQA review. When appropriate, environmental review will be performed at the project level. FISCAL IMPACT Sufficient funds exist in the adopted City Council budget for the implementation of the program. ADDITIONAL P~BLI~NQTIFICATIONAND ~QRRESPONDENCE Teresa Clark, President of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, was mailed a copy of this report. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council receive and file this report and direct staff to prepare the first award for presentation at the Annual Economic Development Conference to be held May 25, 1995. This recognition program is designed to highlight the investment in our community put forth by local businesses. FINDINGS It is a goal of the City Council to foster economic well-being in our community by attracting quality businesses to the City of Poway and by sustaining established local merchants. For this reason, the Mayor introduced the concept of providing a recognition program to acknowledge Poway companies which renovate, upgrade, or otherwise reinvest in their businesses. The Commercial Enhancement Award program will provide a mechanism to express the City's appreciation for improvements to commercial projects within the City of Poway. Selected businesses will receive a certificate from the Council. 2 of 3 APR4 1995 ITEM 10 Agenda Report April 4, 1995 Page 2 An informal nomination process will be used to select quarterly recipients of the Commercial Enhancement Award based on completing one or more physical improvements: 1) Building facade 2} Expansion of facilities {including technological upgrade of facility or equipment} 3) Landscape redesign 4} Signage 5) Parking lot upgrade 6) Other physical improvements as deemed significant Nominations for the Commercial Enhancement Award will be submitted to the Office of the Mayor for review.
