TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council FROM: James L. Bowersox, City Mana~ INITIATED BY: John D. Fitch, Assistant City Manager:il\ James R. Williams, Director of Public Services ~ Daniel W. Cannon, Maintenance Operations Ma a rf:j~ DATE: August 1, 1995 SUBJECT: Approval of the Purchase of a Root Pruner BACKGROUND Thousands of feet of the City's sidewalk inventory has been damaged by tree roots and more feet are in jeopardy of being destroyed. A root pruner is necessary to cut tree roots growing under sidewalks thus preventing sidewalk root damage. Staff evaluated various alternatives to saving trees causing sidewalk destruction and reducing damage to the infrastructure. Root pruning program would provide for a twelve to eighteen inch ditch being dug next to a sidewalk or curb and a hard plastic root barrier being placed in the ditch. This has been proven effective.
