Bowersox, City Manager/Executive Director INITIATED BY: John D. Fitch, Assistant City Manager<1~ Robert L. Thomas, Director of Community Services ~ DATE: September 19, 1995 SUBJECT: Appropriation of Additional Redevelopment Agency Funds for Expansion of the Weingart Center BACKGROUND The Weingart Center is currently being expanded by 3400 square feet. The original budget of $364,026 did not contain sufficient funds to install the fire alarm system. Also, additional funding is needed to complete the carpeting in the Weingart Center card room and library and lounge, and to complete the landscaping. FINDINGS The City has previously allocated $261,155 in Redevelopment funds to expand the Weingart Center. The Poway Valley Senior Citizens Corp. has been responsible for securing an additional $102,871 to fund the 3400 square foot expansion. As the construction project has proceeded it has become apparent that insufficient funds will be available to complete the project. An additional $16,000 will be required for the installation of a fire alarm system. Also, an additional $5,000 is needed for carpeting in the card room and library and lounge, and an additional $4,000 to complete the landscaping on the west side of the building. It is anticipated that the expansion of the Weingart Center will be completed by early November. In addition to benefitting the operation of the senior center, the added space will also be available for community groups and City recreation programs.
