SUBJECT: Approval of the Purchase of a Brush Chipper
ABSTRACT
The City's brush chipper is no longer cost effective to repair, has reached its anticipated life span and
replacement is recommended. Staff evaluated the City's needs, developed specifications and located a City
that had recently bought a brush chipper that met our specifications.
Vermeer-California, Inc. agreed to allow the City of Poway to utilize the City of Santa Monica's bid for a
1250 Brush Chipper. It is recommended that the City Council waive the formal bid requirement and
authorize staff to purchase a 1250 Brush Chipper from Vermeer-California, Inc. of Ontario for $21,144.63.

SUBJECT: Approval of the Purchase of a Brush Chipper
BACKGROUND
The City has an inventory of two brush chippers to maintain the rights-of-way along 137 linear miles
of roadway, 180 acres of park land and 3,000 acres of open space. One brush chipper has reached
its useful life and is recommended for replacement by the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor. The
brush chipper has been fully amortized and funding for its replacement is available through the
Equipment Replacement Fund.
FINDINGS
Staff reviewed a number of brush chippers and located a city that had recently bought a brush
chipper that met our specifications. The City of Santa Monica had competitively bid for a brush
chipper. On June 20, 1994, through Bid Number 2488, Purchase Order 93358, they purchased a
~iesel powered, industrial, disk type, 41-1/4 inch diameter 1250 Brush Chipper for a total price of
$21,144.63. Vermeer-California, Inc. (through a successful competitive bid process) agreed to allow
the City of Po way to use the City of Santa Monica's bid price for the 1250 Brush Chipper. The bid
from Vermeer -California, Inc. met all specifications and was within budget.
