Res 15-008RESOLUTION NO. 15 -008 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POWAY, CALIFORNIA DECLARING A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO TO PURSUE FUNDING SOURCES TO EXPAND THE IRON MOUNTAIN OPEN SPACE AREA BY POTENTIALLY ACQUIRING ADDITIONAL OPEN SPACE LANDS WHEREAS, the City of Poway and the County of San Diego are committed to conserving and protecting our region's most pristine open space lands and natural resources; and WHEREAS, the City of Poway and the County of San Diego have demonstrated this commitment by respectively adopting Poway's Subarea Habitat Conservation Plan and the County's Multiple Species Conservation Program; and WHEREAS, the City of Poway and County of San Diego are also committed to providing public access to public lands for recreational opportunities such as riding and hiking trails; and WHEREAS, Iron Mountain Trail in the City of Poway is a popular destination for riding and hiking enthusiasts looking to enrich their lives and health; and WHEREAS, nearly 800 acres may be available for acquisition which could provide an open space buffer and land for trail connections between Iron Mountain, the County of San Diego's Boulder Oaks Preserve and Dos Picos Park, Mount Woodson and Lake Poway; and WHEREAS, a proposed bridge across State Route 67 would improve upon the efforts to complete the Trans County Trail, a 110- mile -long east -west trail from Torrey Pines to Anza Borrego Desert State Park through San Diego County; and WHEREAS, a partnership is proposed between the City of Poway and the County of San Diego to pursue expanding the Iron Mountain open space area by acquiring additional open space lands that would provide opportunities to add trail connections and preserve wildlife corridors; and WHEREAS, the partnership would direct staff at the City of Poway and the County of San Diego to jointly explore potential funding sources, including grants, for land acquisitions in the Iron Mountain area. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Poway that the City of Poway has confirmed its commitment to work with the County of San Diego to pursue funding sources to purchase additional open space lands in the vicinity of Iron Mountain, which will provide additional recreational opportunities for the public.
